EchoStar Debuts DTV Pal Plus

DTV Pal Plus
Satellite provider EchoStar has introduced the DTV Pal Plus, a new version of its DTV Pal analog to digital converter box, featuring analog pass-through and an enhanced digital tuner for optimizing weak signal areas.

The box joins the Dish network's DTV Pal lineup of digital to analog converters targeting the DTV transition. Earlier this year, the company released the TR-40, its first D-to-A box, which is eligible for the NTIA's converter box coupons and retails for $60; in August, Dish released a cheaper version, the TR-40 CRA, which retails for $40, essentially making it free to consumers purchasing the box with the $40 NTIA coupon. The TR-40 CRA also included analog pass-through.

The analog pass-through feature in the TR-40 CRA and DTV Pal Plus will allow consumers to continue to receive signals from the more than 2,600 low power TV and Class A stations that will continue to broadcast in analog after February 2009.

In addition to the enhanced tuner and analog pass-through, the DTVPal Plus, which retails for $69.99 and can only be purchased online, also includes a setup wizard, EPG, parental controls, program search, autotune timers for program recording on a connected VCR, support for closed caption, remote control and signal strength popups for troubleshooting lost signals.

I ordered a dtvpal plus but the guy sent me a dtvpal. I'm trying to figure out the difference. It sounds like the only difference is a better reception tuner on the plus model. I have used many converter boxes now in my search for the best one. RCA,Insignia, tivax, and one I cant remember the brand, lol. This dtvpal is the best by far! The picture is good, not as good as RCA, but fine, and the guide is leaps above all others. I recommend it. I Have a dtvpal plus on the way so I'll be able to see the difference between the two then.

I finally figured out a solution to my DTVPal Plus turning itself on when the TV wasn't on and not being able to turn it off with the remote. It would also turn itself off and back on while I was watching a program or the picture will freeze on the screen but the sound would keep going in the background for whatever I was watching. I had even turned it off to watch certain shows in Analog format because of this and it would turn itself on and kill the show I was watching. I decided to see what would happen if I pretended it was brand new out of the box and start all over. I went into the menu and set it back to the Factory Defaults. Then rescanned for new channels and waited for it to power back up. Since I did this it runs as well as it did since I first hooked it up. It has managed to behave for the last 2-1/2 hours. Maybe these things are kind of like computers and when they freeze up and you just have to restart them from its original down state. And by the way, I am a Blonde!

My DTVPal Plus will turn itself on when the TV isn't even on and I can't get it to turn off with the remote. It will also turn itself off and back on while I am watching a program or the picture will freeze on the screen but the sound keeps going in the background for whatever I am watching.

Dang thing wont turn off while on cable, and when off turns on by itself for no apparent reason.

Began using DTVPal Plus January 2009 and can now get an additional dozen digital stations on my Toshiba LCD TV with Channel Master antenna and pre-amp. Could not get these stations prior to using DTVPal Plus.
